FEATURE WALLS

Every house has a difficult space or a blank wall that doesn't seem right even after hanging a few pictures. Perhaps your open plan living space may seen too sparse as the areas are not well defined. With a little imagination and some strategic lighting that empty wall or new dividing wall can become a central feature. In-built display shelving and wall niches are a great way to show off your ornaments and collectibles without bulking your room with additional furniture.

The use of effective lighting will really accentuate your displays. The most common choice is halogen or LED downlights, but lighting is another area where a little imagination can work wonders. LED strip lighting can be hidden to provide a shadow effect and reduce the glare on your your eyes. Pendant lights with vintage style filament bulbs or industrial fittings will give your room a truly unique look. Your electrician (or mine) can advise you as to what type of lighting will be appropriate for your circumstance.

Bulkheads are typically used to hide unsightly pipes, ducts or beams but used effectively they can enhance the look of a room. For example, above a bookcase or kitchen cabinetry a bulkhead will give the desired in-built look and prevent dust settling on top of the unit.

Of course a feature wall can also be practical as well as beautiful with the addition of an in-built heater and entertainment components. See the Fireplaces and Entertainment pages for more information and ideas
